The PMC Prodigy1 has quickly become one of the most popular speakers in our Stockton-on-Tees showroom, and for good reason. As the ideal introduction to the PMC lineup, it brings the brand's legendary "from studio to home" philosophy into a compact, accessible package. Despite its bookshelf size, the Prodigy1 delivers a staggering sense of scale and deep, controlled bass that defies expectations.

Why it’s a HiFiSound favourite: It’s "Simple" in looks but a powerhouse in performance. Whether you are new to the brand or a long-time fan looking to setup a secondary system, we invite you to book a demo and hear why this compact marvel is winning over so many of our customers.

If you're looking for a deeper sound, we recommend looking at the Prodigy 5 Floorstanding Speakers.

Please Note: Speaker grilles available separately, stands not included.

It’s easy to see and hear that it’s closely related to our compact nearfield monitors, a reference in recording and broadcast facilities worldwide: the prodigy1 is more than capable of resolving detail that puts you in touch with the original performance, no matter the size.

The sweet, open top end and natural midrange brings you vivid vocals and instrumental timbres, with a wide, focused soundstage and nimble, cohesive presentation to draw you into the music and make you smile. And small though the speaker may be, it still contains a full-size Advanced Transmission Line and our Laminair technology, that delivers deep, fast, hard-hitting bass.

So what is Advanced Transmission Line (ATL)?

PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology uses a long, highly damped interior tunnel behind the drive unit to absorb unwanted mid and high frequencies while allowing low frequencies to exit the cabinet in-phase with the front speaker cone.

Core Mechanics & Benefits

  • Enhanced Bass Output: Operates over a two-octave bandwidth centred on the line's resonant frequency (where acoustic length equals 1/4 wavelength), significantly boosting low-end performance.
  • Massively Lower Distortion: Air inside the line stiffens and couples to the drive unit, increasing the cone's effective moving mass to lower its resonant frequency and tightly control driver motion.
  • Consistent Response at All Volumes: Unlike ported speakers that rely on level-dependent Helmholtz resonance, ATL maintains its full, extended frequency response even at low listening levels.

Key PMC ATL Innovations

  • Custom Acoustic Foam: Lines the interior to absorb mid/high frequencies, dampen unwanted resonances, and slow the speed of sound to increase the apparent acoustic length of smaller cabinets.
  • Laminair Vents: Divides outgoing air into channels with a larger hydraulic diameter to smooth airflow, eliminating turbulence and port "chuffing."
  • Targeted Resonant Chambers: Internal tuned chambers selectively absorb stubborn resonant frequencies without needing excess foam that could make bass sound overly dry.
  • Co-Engineered Drive Units: Custom in-house drivers designed specifically to work in tandem with the unique pressure parameters of transmission line cabinets.

5 Star - What HiFi Winner 2024
"Such versatility and relatively unfussy positioning help make this yet another pair of PMC speakers we can confidently, wholeheartedly recommend, but it’s the speakers' hugely enjoyable performance that first and foremost seals their five-star fate. They sound terrific and no less ‘PMC’ than the company’s pricier models. Indeed the Prodigy 1 simply open up the PMC sound to a wider audience, and any of that audience in the market for new standmounters should waste no time getting a pair into their home." Read the full review.

"The Prodigy 1 does two important things very well. Firstly, it successfully brings the attributes we associate with PMC down to a price level that the company has not contested in many years. Secondly- and rather more importantly- it manages to be a seriously good listen while it does so." Read the AV Forums review.

"Audiophiles seeking the PMC sound can grab themselves a bargain in the shape of the prodigy1s and I can’t really see how they can be made for the money; so grab a pair quickly since they encapsulate the very essence of the sound that has made the marque so successful." Read the full review.

Outstanding Product

"Choose your cliché, especially 'good things come in small packages'. The prodigy1 is such a clever all-rounder that I now understand why it was a smash hit in Munich. It does everything you'd want at the size and price, provided you site it with care. As I said above, I've been looking for a small speaker just above budget/entry-level, and the prodigy1 standmount entirely fits the bill. I cannot praise it too highly." 5 Star Product

"The single most important thing the prodigy1 does is embody the qualities of the rest of the PMC range. If you like what it does, more concentrated doses are available as you head up the series – which means the prodigy1 has succeeded in its most important aim.

More than this, though, it is one of the most spacious and authoritative standmounts available anywhere near the price and something that will drop into a wide selection of systems and do justice to them"
