The Leak Sandwich 150 and 250 represent the pinnacle of innovation that began in 1961 with the original Leak Sandwich.

These technological advancements are executed with the utmost respect for tradition and a continual commitment to creating high-quality sound reproduction equipment, accessible to every discerning audiophile.

Key Features:

  • 2-way standmount loudspeaker
  • 1.2"(30mm) Coated Textile Dome treble driver
  • 6.5"(170mm) Aluminium-Foamcore Sandwich cone bass driver
  • Real Walnut veneer, Decorative cloth grille provided

Throughout the history of broadcasting and recording, certain exceptional developments have marked significant milestones in the progress of sound reproduction. One such milestone was the world’s first low-distortion amplifier: the famous original Leak Point One, introduced in 1945. Another major breakthrough was the invention of the highly rigid Leak sandwich cone diaphragm, which was remarkably stronger and many times stiffer than all conventional cones of its time.

Originally introduced in 1961, the Leak Sandwich used engineering and design principles from airframe construction. Now, reintroduced and re-engineered with modern advancements, the new Leak Sandwich cone features a stiff aluminum skin on the outer surfaces, where the stresses are greatest, bonded to a thick core of polymethacrylimide (PMI) based structural foam, commonly used in the aerospace and automotive industries. This precision-engineered combination of materials in optimal proportions provides immense rigidity.

As a result, the Leak Sandwich cone reproduces the signal applied to the voice coil without mechanical break-up and its associated distortions. The outcome is a remarkably smooth frequency response, free from violent peaks or troughs across a broad frequency range, indicative of an excellent transient response.

The profound influence of the loudspeaker housing (the cabinet) on overall acoustic performance is often underestimated. Designing it requires a high degree of electroacoustic knowledge, comparable to that needed for designing the motor units themselves.

The new Leak Sandwich cabinet benefits from 60 years of technological development since the original. Its structure comprises MDF and composite board, creating a second 'sandwich' reference with layered boards for optimal cabinet strength. This new cabinet design combines intelligent bracing with the 'sandwich' of materials and maintains specific front-rear bracing, featuring the distinct, visible countersunk screw on the rear—a famous trait of the original. Leak audio devices embody a blend of science and innovation, with industrial design that often garners favourable attention.

Similar to the warmly received Leak Stereo 130 and 230 integrated amplifier models, the new Leak Sandwich 150 and 250 loudspeaker models retain the understated, classic Leak styling. Finished in a luxurious walnut real-wood veneer, the cabinet is adorned with an aluminum trim insert, matched and finished to the same exemplary standards as the driver trims and cone materials.

The decorative grille cloth is purposefully chosen to match the classic Leak styling and specified for maximum acoustic transparency. A keen eye will also notice that the new Leak Sandwich 150 and 250 are supplied in perfectly matched pairs with a ‘handed’ array presentation. Beyond maintaining industrial design traits, the meticulous placement of each driver ensures a truly precise stereo soundstage. In the Leak Sandwich 150 and 250, the high-frequency driver incorporates a rear chamber damped to absorb the output from the back of the dome. This innovation not only isolates the HF unit from the rest of the loudspeaker but also reduces the resonant frequency of the treble unit.

Lowering the resonant frequency below the crossover region allows the bass, mid, and high frequencies to be seamlessly integrated, enhancing detail and harmonics without harshly adjusting the high-frequency definition. This integration is achieved by a meticulously developed crossover, refined over thousands of hours of listening, not just through simulation, as is common in modern loudspeaker design. The Leak Sandwich 150 features a 2-way standmount design with a combination of a 6.5” (170mm) low-frequency 'Sandwich' driver and a 1.2” (30mm) coated textile dome high-frequency driver.
