The AE1 Active is an impressive standmount speaker that comes with integrated class A/B amplification and fully active filter networks. It boasts Acoustic Energy's renowned pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology, which provides refined and impactful sound that lives up to the original AE1's standards. This fully active package includes a self-powered design that makes it convenient to use. Additionally, the speakers have a proprietary aluminium dome tweeter with a unique WDT waveguide that enhances coverage and integration with the room.

Key Features:

  • 2-way active standmount design
  • Bi-amped with two 50-watt class A/B amplifiers per speaker
  • 125mm ceramic hard-anodised spun aluminium cone
  • All analogue inputs via RCA and Balanced XLR

The AE1 Active is an exceptional speaker that combines three decades of AE1 refinement with Acoustic Energy's expertise in the active studio monitor sector. It is fully bi-amped with two 50-watt class A/B amplifiers per speaker, offering unrivalled amplifier speaker integration and class-leading dynamics. The speaker features pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology, a newly developed Acoustic Energy-designed metal dome tweeter, and a Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide, which provides perfect integration with the mid-bass driver and extremely wide and spacious imaging.

The AE1 Active has an all-analogue design that includes wired analogue inputs, a high-quality analogue volume pot, and the highest-quality linear power supplies, making it a powerful and reliable speaker. Its active design allows for accurate tuning to the listening room and placement thanks to +/- 2dB trims for bass and treble response. Additionally, each speaker is equipped with an IEC connector for the mains power supply.

The AE1 Active's external features include a wholly redesigned cabinet with extensively braced heavyweight fibreboard construction, internal damping panels, and a slot port introduced to the AE1 design for the first time. The speaker maximises all the benefits of active loudspeaker design, including reducing crossover losses, eliminating speaker cable influences, and delivering unrivalled dynamic power. With a bandwidth from 40Hz to 25kHz, efficiency of 104dB for 1Vrms, and a maximum SPL of 115dB, the AE1 Active offers unmatched performance in a small package. It is equally comfortable in the home or the recording studio, with adjustable bass and treble and a choice of RCA or balanced XLR connections that allow the speaker to blend seamlessly into any listening environment.

Tweeter

The 27mm metal dome tweeter in the AE1 Active is a newly designed Acoustic Energy unit that works in harmony with the Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide. This design allows for perfect integration with the mid/bass driver and delivers extremely wide and spacious imaging.

Drivers

The unique pure piston ceramic aluminium cone technology used in the AE1 Active design is the key to its success. In its fifth generation, this 125mm ceramic hard-anodised spun aluminium cone offers exceptional stiffness at low weight, eliminating the cone flex and break-up nodes typically found in paper and plastic cone designs at frequencies.

Amplification

The AE1 Active is an all-analogue design focused on uncompromising performance. It includes wired analogue inputs, both balanced XLR and standard RCA, the highest quality linear power supplies, and two pair-matched, high-performance 50Watt Class A/B amplifiers per speaker. The design team experimented with various technologies, including wireless inputs, switch mode power supplies, Class D amplification, and DSP, but none of them delivered the audio performance that matches the legendary AE1 badge.

Cabinet Design

The AE1 Active cabinet has extensively braced heavyweight fibreboard construction with internal damping panels and features a slot port introduced to the AE1 design for the first time. Acoustic Energy's R&D programme into slot port loading, which several of the company's models have already benefited from, has resulted in the AE1 Active's port providing unrivalled cross-sectional area, reduced baffle space, and significantly reduced 'wind-noise' at high volumes.
