The original AE1 was a revolutionary speaker, conceived to deliver studio-grade performance in a compact form. It was a bold departure from the bulky, inefficient designs of its day—and an immediate success, becoming a staple in professional studios and audiophile setups alike.

Now, four decades later, we celebrate this groundbreaking legacy with the launch of the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition. It brings that original vision into the modern era, combining cutting-edge engineering with a timeless design.

The Engineering Behind the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition

Recreating the legendary AE1 was a significant challenge. Since the original parts were long out of production, we had to start the design completely from scratch. However, to preserve the speaker's established high-performance sound and classic design, we developed new components while strictly maintaining the core philosophy of the original: a stiff, heavy cabinet, twin front ports, and a powerful driver combination. We integrated carefully considered modernisations without detriment to the original's character.

A completely new metal dome tweeter was developed specifically to match the original's sound profile. This unit features a larger 29mm voice coil supporting a slightly bigger aluminum dome. This increase in radiating area helps to significantly lower distortion compared to a more standard 25mm dome. Its ultra-shallow profile provides excellent bandwidth, while a large rear chamber keeps the fundamental resonance low and absorbs rear energy. Crucially, like the original, this tweeter is ferrofluid cooled and damped, ensuring greater power handling, improved dynamics, and reduced thermal compression.

The new woofer was also engineered to precisely match the characteristic sound of the original. While conforming to modern 125mm standards, the cone retains the signature straight-sided aluminum profile. We even resurrected the 'spinning' forming process—a technique distinct from the more common pressing method—which was fundamental to the original's natural midrange and power handling. The cone itself is further strengthened by a hard anodized ceramic coating on both sides, creating an extremely stiff sandwich construction. Beneath the trademark aluminium ‘pointy’ dust cap, the motor structure is powerful, but we introduced one key modern improvement: an aluminium shorting ring. This dramatically reduces the distortion caused by motional variation in the voice coil's inductance. Furthermore, by designing the new woofer with a 5-ohm DCR instead of the original 7-ohms, the new AE1s are now easier to drive and require less amplifier power.

Drawing inspiration from the luxury 'Signature' version, the crossover employs low-order filters and high-quality components to achieve a very natural, dynamic sound. We've balanced this latest version to be enjoyed in a typical home environment rather than being strictly a studio monitor. The result is a speaker with a warm, natural midrange, good bass weight for its size, forgiving high frequencies, and exceptional punch throughout its range.

All these enhancements are housed inside a luxuriously finished cabinet, coated in ten layers of high gloss black paint or walnut wood veneer. The cabinet has been upgraded to include our RSC (Resonance Suppression Composite) material, successfully applied in our high-performance models. This material significantly increases stiffness, effectively capturing the sound of the original's concrete-lined cabinets without the production drawbacks. Finally, since the original ports were unavailable, we re-tooled them with subtle tweaks, including adding an internal flare to reduce distortion and allow for more bass output.

The result is a loudspeaker with clean, uncluttered lines, offering unparalleled levels of performance and quality that delivers a thrilling and powerful presentation worthy of the AE1 mark, making it equally comfortable in the home or the recording studio.
