The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition (Rega Special) features a newly designed aluminium metal skin HPL laminate plinth, delivering the stiffest, most rigid platform ever created at the Planar 3 level. The sleek, dark brushed metallic finish, complemented by a high-gloss black edge, creates an eye-catching foundation for the iconic Planar 3. Included with the RS Edition is a custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU, with each motor's vibration circuit individually tuned for optimal performance. The low-noise 24V motor powers the sub-platter via Rega's Reference EBLT drive belt, ensuring unparalleled speed accuracy. To complete the setup, the legendary handmade RB330 tonearm is paired with the all-new, award-winning Nd5 moving magnet cartridge for an exceptional listening experience.

Rega has long been at the forefront of using lightweight, ultra-rigid plinths to enhance turntable performance. Our pioneering use of a lightweight particulate core combined with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin formed the foundation of the legendary Planar range, setting the standard for high-quality audio.

The new Planar 3 RS Edition takes this philosophy to the next level, incorporating a High Pressure Laminate (HPL) design typically reserved for our premium models like the Planar 6, Planar 8, and Planar 10. This HPL construction significantly increases rigidity, providing an even more stable platform for superior sound. The plinth is finished in a stunning dark brushed aluminium with a satin finish, giving it both visual elegance and structural integrity.

To further enhance performance, the RS Edition features our advanced double brace system, strategically positioned between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing. This creates a rigid "stressed beam" structure that reinforces the plinth where it matters most.

This intricate design helps to prevent energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which can distort the music. At the same time, it avoids the pitfalls of excessive mass, which can transfer motor or bearing noise into the record's rotation. By using carefully positioned braces and double-thickness phenolic resin in critical areas, we've effectively minimised unwanted energy transmission, ensuring a cleaner, more accurate sound.

ND5 Moving Magnet Cartridge

The Nd5 moving magnet cartridge is meticulously handcrafted by Rega’s skilled technicians to deliver exceptional performance. Featuring a perfectly elliptical nude diamond stylus, the Nd5 uses a true elliptical shape, created through an elliptical grinding process with polycrystalline manmade diamond. The design incorporates new generator geometry with perfect symmetry to ensure precise channel balance and an optimised pole gap for superior linearity and minimal crosstalk. This results in a much wider soundstage compared to previous models.

The Nd5 also boasts miniaturised parallel coils, wound in-house with 38-micron wire and just 1275 turns, resulting in a low-inductance, low-impedance generator for improved high-frequency response. In line with Rega’s commitment to sustainability, the Nd5 is packaged in 100% recyclable materials. Recently reviewed by Hi-Fi Choice, the Nd5 was praised as a "dramatic improvement" over its predecessors, the Elys2 and Exact, and is considered one of the best designs available at its price point.

High-pressure laminate Plinth

The Planar 3 RS Edition features a high-pressure laminate (HPL) plinth with a brushed dark aluminium skin, offering enhanced rigidity and improved sound performance. This premium construction ensures a solid and stable base for optimal audio playback.

Motor

The turntable is equipped with a 24V low-noise precision motor and a custom CNC-machined aluminium pulley. This setup provides exceptional speed accuracy and low vibrations for a cleaner, more precise listening experience.

Neo MK2 PSU

The Neo MK2 PSU is a sophisticated power supply that offers user-controllable fine speed adjustments, an advanced anti-vibration motor circuit, and electronic speed change functionality. It reduces motor noise, enhances speed stability, and ensures precise rotational speed accuracy for superior performance.

Double Brace Technology

Rega’s Double Brace system strengthens the plinth with a 3mm phenolic bottom brace and a metalised phenolic top brace, strategically placed between the tonearm mount and the main hub bearing. This forms a "stressed beam" assembly that enhances rigidity where it’s most needed. The design prevents unwanted energy absorption and resonance, which can distort the music. The use of braces, rather than a full solid skin, allows for double-thickness phenolic resin in critical areas, addressing issues of mass absorption and unwanted energy transfer that could affect playback quality.

Central Bearing

The Planar 3 RS Edition features Rega’s patented brass main hub central bearing, which has been further refined to improve fit and reduce stress on the bearing. This ensures smooth and precise rotation, enhancing overall performance and durability.

RB330 Tonearm

The RB330 tonearm, developed using the latest 3D CAD and CAM technology, is the culmination of over 40 years of design expertise. It features a new bearing housing and tonearm tube engineered for intelligent mass redistribution, reducing resonance points for better sound clarity. With zero play in the bearings and near-frictionless movement from high-precision bearing assemblies, the RB330 is capable of extracting more detail from your vinyl than ever before.
